Our Haunting

By Sherrie Funke

There were many experiences that happened in the old farmhouse, built in 1900, that we used to live in. I will share a few of these experiences here.

One experience took place nearly every night around late midnight to 2:00 a.m. My husband and I heard soft music playing. The music was always the same kind of music - soft Lawrence Welk style.

The first main encounter we had took place in our daughter's room which was next to ours. The closet in her room went under the stairway. As with many children, our daughter had her share of battery operated toys. One of these was a car with Big Bird in it. The on/off switch was set on the under side of the car in such a way that we had to use a pencil to flip the switch whenever our daughter wanted to play with it or was done playing with it.

On this particular weekend, our daughter was gone. We were in bed sleeping when we were both awakened by a horrible grinding noise coming from our daughter's room from the back of her closet. We pushed each other, neither one of us wanting to go first, and with a flashlight, we looked into the back of the closet. We found her Big Bird car turned on and running.

Our daughter also had a dollhouse filled with other battery operated toys with switches that were difficult to work. At times, when our daughter would be gone, all those toys would come to life on their own as well.

The second strange encounter took place after we moved our daughter upstairs to make room for our second child. My husband was home alone one night. At some point during this time, he heard a small voice calling from mom from upstairs. He called back automatically, "Mom's not here" then remembered that there was no one else home.

We were also awakened one night by a small voice calling for mom. It seemed to be coming from the top of the stairs. Again, the kids were gone, so there should have been no small voice to be heard.

The picture at the top of this page is of an object we found in our home in 1991. We were cleaning out the basement and came across it, but have never determined what exactly it is. However, it wasn't long before we realized that the strange little object seemed to hold bad luck. Odd enough, but we also discovered that the bad luck always came in sets of three.

We cannot remember two of the things that happened after my husband found it as it was quite some time ago, but the first was that his dog died. We also discovered that the bad luck didn't just affect the person who found it. It seemed that anyone who touched it would have their three experience streak with bad luck.

The most memorable of these was what happened to my husband's cousin. He touched it, curious as we all were about what it was, and a week later, all his barns burned down, something happened to his car, and we cannot recall the third experience. We finally packed it up and put it back in the basement, only taking it out again to take the picture for this article.

We still have no idea what the object is or what it was used for.
