The Ghosts of Coombehead

By: Hannah Dixon

A few weeks back, a lady who my mum used to see around at work, came up to see my dad about a quote for some work. She is well-known to be a medium and has often asked my mum if she could come to the house and stand inside the back door to see if she could pick up on anything paranormal. Mum said no, but when the lady came to see dad, he invited her in to see if she could sense anything.

On entering the kitchen, she said that there was an elderly lady standing there feeding chickens from a basket under her arm. She said that the lady looked very confused and bewildered because of the surroundings. The medium said that the lady lived there when the house was a poor farm in the 17th century and that our kitchen had been outside where the chickens were kept.

The medium then went to what we call the lounge and immediately said, "This is the snug." In fact, the room we call the snug is next door to the lounge. She said that in the corner, by the TV, there was a Victorian gentleman smoking a pipe and he was wearing a fancy waistcoat. Both myself and my dad have smelled tobacco and cigar smoke in there before and we have often wondered about it. The medium was never told anything before she came in either.

She went into the living room where our bed and breakfast guests sit and picked up on a very strict man. She also said that there was a lectern in there. In fact, the man was Derek Adams, the man who made what is the bed and breakfast into a chapel many years ago. He loved the house and used to have people around for tea on Sundays and he had an organ in there which they used to sing along to. He died of cancer and his ashes are in the front garden. We knew about Derek Adams and guessed that the 'strict man' was him.

Well, there you have it. I was pretty enthralled by it all, but it doesn't end there. My mum shared this with me not too long ago and added to the thrill of the house.

Mum sleeps in my old room because it's so hot and Dad won't let her open the window in their room at night because it keeps him awake. Mum was asleep in my room and was awakened by someone thumping her hard on her back. She said it was quite painful, although I don't know if she was left with any marks on her skin. She thought this was weird, but ignored it and went back to sleep.

A few nights later, she was awakened again. This time by a breeze going past her face as though someone were trying to cuff her around the ear and had missed. She said she knew instinctively it was a fist and that the person was just missing her by millimeters.

The next day, she told my dad, who believes in ghosts. Mum has always been a skeptic despite what the medium told her about the ghosts in the house. As for me, I don't have a problem with the room. It was my room for nearly ten years and no one ever hit me or woke me up. I remember I sometimes heard heavy breathing late at night, like someone with a wheezy chest, but I ignored it and I haven't heard it for years.

My parents never told Emmy - my sister - about the goings on in my room because they wanted her to move into it as it was much bigger than hers and she needed the space. However, she refuses to sleep in there saying that she feels "uncomfortable".
