Science and Angels

I've never experienced any interaction with angels, but we've all read about women who have been able to pick up the corner of a car to free the woman's trapped child or children. "Science" explains these amazing tales by saying that a mother, with a child in immediate danger of death or serious injury, has a super-burst of adrenaline. It may be true, in some cases, that the short-term strength a woman has that's equal to the strength of several grown men is the result of endogenous adrenaline. Most mothers will do anything to save one or more of their children. When a 100-pound woman lifts a 3,000+ pound car - even if it's just one corner - endogenous adrenaline will give her muscles a brief surge of nearly super-human strength to save her children. Adrenaline will not, however, make bone, tendon, and/or cartilage stronger than it is normally. Most women who have had to rescue children from dire circumstances don't end up with collapsed vertebrae, damage to their hips or pelvic bones, torn knee cartilage, strained Achilles' tendons, dislocated shoulders or bursitis in major joints. How is it possible for women, and sometimes men, to move objects much heavier than the human body is designed to lift without permanently damaging their bodies? For those who haven't dealt with little ones, a two-year-old moves just under Mach 1, if possible, with something sharp in his hand or mouth. If the two-year-old is playing with another two-year-old, the trouble the pair of them can get into in a matter of minutes is truly impressive. I'm not sure any of us would survive the "terrible twos" without some kind of intervention from somewhere! When a two-year-old takes off heading for a road with traffic, is it an angel that helps the child trip so Mom or Dad can catch up with the little darling and explain traffic yet again? If we have "angels" looking out for us, it would be sensible that these angels would lend a hand (or a shoulder) when a human needs help getting a car off a child or getting a car full of children out of a ditch. |
