On the outskirts of town in Gurdon, Arkansas, about a two and half mile hike into the woods, there lies a mystery called Gurdon Light. This glowing bright light seems to appear along the railroad tracks and is seen clearest on dark, overcast nights. Sometimes it is seen as a bluish white light and, at other times, glowing orange. It is said to always be on the move. Many have witnessed this mysterious light in the past and those who wish to take the trek today will see it. This has been going on since sometime before 1931.
There are three speculations concerning the origin of this light. The first concerns a railroad worker who was on the late shift. He fell on the tracks, was run over by a train and decapitated. This part of the story has been confirmed, however, the rest is just legend. It is believed that the light is this man's lantern as he walks the tracks looking for his head. The second speculation is about another railroad worker who was murdered in 1931, assumedly along the railroad tracks. This murder has also been confirmed and some believe the light is his lantern as he searches for his killer. The final speculation has to do with quartz crystals underneath Gurdon that are stressed by train activity causing them to emit electricity, thus, offering a light.
Whatever Gurdon Light is, the residents of Gurdon have seen it hundreds of times and it's also been filmed by television crews and witnessed by many out-of-towners. It is obviously not just a fluke seen once in awhile, yet still no explanation has been found.
