There was nothing particularly special about this night other than we had our friends with us that I mentioned previously. We gave them a cassette tape recorder and kept The Night Watchman’s disc recorder with us, then went off to opposite ends of the cemetery.

Upon returning home, we loaded the photos up in the computer and looked at them with our friends as it had been their first official investigation. They were anxious to see if we’d captured anything. They were not disappointed.

We didn’t listen to the tapes that night as it was very late and they needed to get back home early in the morning. After viewing the photos, we all went to bed.

It was several days before I had the chance to listen to the cassette tape and the mini-disc recorder. I was working on the magazine for the website and listening with headphones at the same time, when I got the biggest thrill AND chill I think I’ve ever had.

Now, my name is Christina, but I have gone only by Chris for many years unless I’m sending new emails or signing something of importance. In fact, if someone calls me Christina, it sounds very foreign to my ears. The only people who ever called me Christina were my mother when she was angry with me and my grandmother who did it just to tease me as she knew that I didn’t like the name. So, upon hearing the words “Christina, we survived” on not just one, but two recorders, knowing that we had split up as couples and gone to opposite ends of the cemetery, I was astounded to say the least. No one could have played a trick as we each had a recorder and the voice was identical on both.

None of us are from this area and we don’t have relatives buried in this cemetery, so to me, this meant that the spirit that spoke to me was still out there and could go anywhere she pleased. This was a very profound experience for me and a quick education about life after death in only three words. I found out nearly a year later when my children were at this cemetery during the day taking pictures that I did have relatives buried in this cemetery. A stone with a man and woman buried beneath from the 1800's. It took some searching in my family genealogy book to find them as they had gone by their middle names on the stones. No one close to me knew that our relatives had come this far to live.

Many of the messages that we have recorded do not make any sense to us. They seem to be random messages that come out of the blue. Even if we are holding a conversation with one another while recording and get a message, it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with what we are saying. We cannot explain why this is, but occasionally we do get one that relates to what we are saying or what we’ve said.

One of these was during our 30-day investigation at the Hillside Cemetery in State Center, Iowa. It was pretty cold, 46 degrees, and the wind was blowing, so as usual, I was cold. I made comment as I was trying to take the photos that I was afraid they might come out blurred as I was shivering so badly. On our recorder, right after I had said this out loud to The Night Watchman, a voice could be heard asking, “Have you been shivering?”

Now, many people believe that the only places that you can record spirit voices are in places that are known to be haunted. We don’t agree. We believe that many spirits are not bound to any specific place, but have the freedom to go wherever they choose whenever they choose. There may be some spirits that are bound in certain places, but we don’t believe they make up the majority.

There are four people that I correspond with for the website that have spent a lot of time recording in their own homes. One woman began to record because she had paranormal activity going on in her home and knew that a woman had hung herself in the garage. She has captured the voice of this woman, but as she continued to record every day, she also started getting many other spirit voices. It seemed the more she recorded, the more messages would come through.
