WILL YOU PROOFREAD YOUR BOOK YOURSELF?

Both traditional and print-on-demand publishers advise against proofreading your own work. The reason is simple. You are just too close to it to really see the errors that can and do occur. It's very easy to skip over the fact that you have forgotten the word "the" in a sentence as you are familiar with what you have written and are actually only skimming as you proofread. Simple misspellings of the words "there" and "their" can happen without even noticing. The errors that you normally find in books are simple ones that the author never notices, but the reader will.

IS EDITING REALLY ALL THAT IMPORTANT?

As a writer, my answer is an emphatic YES! If I have worked on a book for nearly a year, sometimes much longer, I want the end product to be as absolutely perfect as it can be. I have created a work of art and I want others to see what I have done. If they start reading the book and state out loud to someone that the content of the book is fabulous, but the spelling is atrocious, I feel I have done a disservice to myself and also to anyone who reads my book. If a sentence is missing a key word which does not allow the reader to understand what the sentence was supposed to say, I've taken away some of the pleasure of their reading. Though seemingly small errors, people don't forget. If you have plans for other books, it is best to make a really good impression on the first one and to continue to do so in every book you produce.
